Hannah Martin’s Bridal Masterclass at Delamar Academy

Hannah Martin is one of the top makeup artists in the industry working with A-listers, beauty editors and royalty. Humble, hard working and with an infectious positivity, Hannah bought the sunshine into the Academy last week. We were so lucky to have her inspire the students with an excellent demo. A Hannah Martin Bridal Makeup is known for her expertly corrected under eye, a flawless yet natural base and a hint of blush to create youthful radiance. The highlight of the evening was Hannah’s in-depth talk about her career and hilarious stories…

Hannah’s early career

Before Hannah knew she wanted to be a makeup artist, she auditioned to train at acting school, receiving every knock back and rejection imaginable. Her careers advisor at college recommended she become a nurse, but to the loss of our health service, Hannah became swept away by the university drama society, doing makeup for their productions. Enthusiastic about this role, nursing became a distant memory and Hannah pursued the goal of working for Bobbi Brown, a brand that matched her beauty values. After calling the area manager every day for weeks, Hannah finally landed a role a studio manager, not long before Bobbi herself took Hannah under her wing.

Fast-forward to today, and Hannah is an industry leader, no longer working for Bobbi Brown and in hot demand by the most prestigious clients imaginable. A recent career highlight was her work on the Royal Wedding with Princess Eugenie. Hannah explained how calm and professional she is on these jobs. Working with such special clients, a Hannah feels very privileged to do her job. We were so inspired by this career journey, propelled forward by Hannah’s remarkable soft skills, sparkling personality and knack for making anyone in her presence feel comfortable.

Hannah’s top make-up tips were to:

  • Think about the look as a whole, considering the dress, flowers, venue and hair. A very hippy/boho, country inspired wedding won’t suit a really strong, glamorous makeup look.

  • Don’t do anything too trend focused, so to keep the look timeless.

  • Correct and brighten the under eye area with a really good corrector and concealer, but keep the rest of the base fairly light.

  • Blush and lip balm are key products for the touch-ups, to keep the makeup looking really fresh throughout the day.

  • Don’t over-do the skincare and primer, it can actually create a rolling effect, or provide too much water/oil, which the makeup will slide off.

  • Mascara is to be applied liberally. No barely-there lashes, put on a decent couple of coats of mascara with a curled lash, this really frames the eye best!

  • Brows should look defined but natural, soft and without any hard lines.

  • Most importantly, do what you need to do to make your bride feel incredible. If she doesn’t feel like herself without a strong eyeliner or red lip, then give her the most skilfully applied liner and lip look. You are providing a highly personal service, after all.

“I know how to work with people. This is the skillset that has really helped me get to where I am today.”

Critical acclaim

We can confidently say that Hannah’s makeup skills are excellent too! BAFTA winning makeup artist and Delamar tutor Catherine Scoble, had the following to say:

“I learnt so much! I found the delicacy of Hannah’s work really impressive. She is the perfect example of a makeup artist who has the right balance of personal skills and the most empathetic nature, something I am really pleased the students got to watch in action.”

Hannah stressed the importance of using tried and tested products, with techniques that won’t let you down. The students were advised never to try out something new on a wedding day. Advice about punctuality, empathy and reading your client’s body language, were all discussed in great detail.

A huge thanks to Hannah for making the time for us during a really busy week. Her services were auctioned off at a Kensington Palace charity ball, the evening after! Well done to student Erin Steadman, who styled the model’s hair into a gorgeous bridal style. Finally, thank you to Andriana at Models1, she really enjoyed the experience and looked stunning both before and certainly after Hannah’s makeup magic.
