The building blocks of industry employment

As a prerequisite for the course, you must have taken the Period Wigs and Contemporary Hair courses with us at Delamar or be able to provide us with evidence of sufficient hair skills.

Students on the Advanced Hair course learn how to set real hair lace wigs (as used in the industry) into the key period styles — Edwardian, Early and Late Victorian, 1920s finger waves, 1930s, 1940s, and the fundamental techniques to approach all hairstyles, both contemporary and historical.

Skills such as how to make a hair cage and create a hairstyle around it, how to use padding, switches and pieces, and how to set, steam and dress acrylic wigs are invaluable for working in the industry.

You will also be taught how to set flunkie wigs and dress them out.

Proper historical research and primary reference materials are important on this course. Students learn how to find appropriate reference material from which to create the hairstyles.

Tips and tricks such as how to make a wig fit the head when it has not been specially made for the actor, how to blend the actor’s hairline into the wig, and how to understand hair continuity are just a few of the elements which also set this hair course apart from any other.

The major appeal of this course stems from the tutors who have designed and delivered the classes for over 5 years. These tutors are artists who are so well known and respected in the industry that our students often find themselves being hired as a result of their recommendation:

By the end of the end of the Advanced Hair course, students will:

  • Possess the practical skills to launch a career in the film, TV or theatre industry

  • Know how to research a subject and use relevant reference material to fulfil a hair brief

  • Own a professional kit and know how to use everything in it

A full-time course for a fulfilling career

  • Classes run 10:00am - 4:00pm, Monday - Friday, in the Academy

  • All equipment, materials and tools are included in the course fee. Students do not need to bring anything other than a notepad and pen.

  • Classes sizes are small - no more than 12 students per class to create a strong tutor to student ratio

  • Termly tutorials with a tutor and Academy Principal are held with each student to provide support, advice and learn about each individual student’s goals

  • We hold guest masterclasses and industry talks throughout the year featuring top industry experts and artists

  • Professional discounts of around 30% are offered to our students by brands such as Mac, Kryolan, NARS, Charlotte Tilbury, Ilamasqua and more

  • Tuition is practical and hands-on, with a tutor demo in the morning, followed by practical sessions for the rest of the day, in which students learn how to handle specialist equipment, tools and materials

  • We place emphasis on individual and group creativity, and all subjects are underpinned by theory, research, and visual references
