The Delamar Academy guide to pro discounts

The Delamar Academy guide to pro discounts

Ideally, you would have a professional makeup discount for every brand in your kit right? We know the make-up artist struggle – your kit is very expensive; those little bottles costing £30 each, and brushes that are hand-made by artisan Japanese craftspeople, palettes often worth £80 here and £120 there. You need them all to work, without them your clients and fellow artists would look discerningly upon your spread of products and judge you for not having the best stuff. For this reason (and many more practical reasons!) the starter kit at Delamar Academy alone is worth over £1000. It hurts the bank account of every make-up artist who does unpaid editorial work or unpaid work experience on student films because lets be real – it’s not merely “unpaid” it’s actually “self-funded”.

Being a makeup artist is expensive

Many new graduates and people working in the make-up industry will attest to the hardship of building and maintaining a kit. Once you start working, you will burn through moisturiser, cotton buds, foundation and translucent powder like a new parent of twins gets through nappies. Hurrah! A job is booked, and you “just pop to Boots”, leaving £63 poorer and wondering how on earth you will pay your rent. This is a reality for many new make-up artists. We are not in the business of disillusionment here at Delamar, but we can also assure you that the self-funded work does not last long. The professional TV and Film industry will cover materials for work experience graduates, and fashion editorial make-up artists receive credits – meaning they can call-in loads of make-up from the brand they choose to credit. Often this make-up is worth more than the day rate of an experienced make-up artist anyway. Silver linings!
