20 things – You know you’re a make-up artist when…

You might relate to some of these funny thoughts and experiences that make-up artists have in common.

You know you’re a make-up artist when:

  1. Watching a film you always try to distinguish the wigs from the real hair.
  2. You see and shudder at the “Instagram Make-up” caked on the faces of too many people around you.
  3. Brand new palettes from your favourite brands stop you in your tracks with excitement.
  4. You always carry a pressed powder with you at all times. Keeping shine at bay!
  5. Watching stars on the red carpet, you instantly look up the make-up artists who have created their look.
  6. Your pro membership cards make you feel a misplaced sense of having ‘made it’.
  7. Shopping in the Mac store, you play a little game with yourself mentally naming colours to turn over the product and check if you are correct.
  8. The edges on a prosthetic make-up are the first thing you look for before deciding if you like the design.
  9. You always look for continuity errors on films and TV dramas.
  10. Watching horror films, other people see gore, whereas you see Skin Illustrator, Ben Nye Fresh Blood, Nick Dudman runny blood, wound filler and 3rd
  1. Any eyeliner or bold lip you see is scanned for mistakes.
  2. People always ask you to recommend products – a question you hate to answer because it involves expensive and difficult to get hold of products.
  3. Having to remind people that you are a make-up artist and not a surgeon.
  4. Hiding your rage when a client shows you a photo of a Kardashian/ model, who has been retouched and looks nothing like the client. “Please can you make me look like this?”
  5. When you work an 8-hour day and revel in the delight that this, to you, is a half-day.
  6. Seeing someone with a large bruise or nasty injury and asking them to let you take a photo, for your reference folder.
  7. You never stop cleaning brushes.
  8. People ask you “What is the best foundation?” and you know many different types that suit different skin with different finishes.Where to begin answering this question?
  9. Your kit is worth more than your kitchen appliances.
  10. You buy cotton wool pads, cotton buds and IPA like new parent of twins would buy.
