Kitty Noofah

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE in Professional Make-up Design course 2016

A year at Delamar has taken me so far and without them I would not have the confidence and skills that have got me where l am today. From start to finish there was not a moment l was not learning new skills thanks to the tutors that are dedicated and motivated to make you the best you can be. Coming into the course my experience with hair and makeup was next to your everyday average girl and within months they have given me the abilities to go out and do hair, makeup and special effects for fashion shows, photo-shoots, short films and music videos. They gave me to confidence to enter completions at the Paintopia body painting festival and the National Make Up Awards 2016. As a result l was privileged enough to be awarded first place in Fashion Artistry and runner up as the Overall Student Winner for Fashion/Editorial at the Student National Makeup Awards (NMUA) 2016. This has opened opportunities to feature on live TV, newspapers and radio broadcasts in Thailand and also feature in FAB UK and i-ASiA magazines. All of this is thanks to Delamar Academy, the first class tutors and the broad experience you gain from this course.

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE in Professional Make-up Design course 2014

Before I decided to apply for Delamar’s 1 year HE Hair and Make- up Design course I did thorough research about all the make-up schools in the UK. One of the main reasons why I chose Delamar was because all the tutors are actively working in the industry and some of them worked on or designed some of my favourite shows and films. After my first visit I was 100% sure I wanted to study here because of the friendly relaxed atmosphere. Throughout the year the Delamar team was very supportive and helpful.

Over my one year I learned exciting new things everyday. I especially enjoyed doing period hair and casualty make – up. The tutors were very helpful and we learned everything for being able to be a valued part of any make – up team.

Since I finished the course I have worked on many TV and Film productions. One of my first jobs was on A Royal Night Out, a feature film which was designed by one of our tutors, Lorraine Hill. After that production I got recommended to other jobs such as Warner Bros’s Pan, BBC1 George Gently, BBC1 Tumble, BBC3 Some Girls, Bad Education the Movie, BBC 1 Frank Sinatra and many others. I’m still in regular contact with the Delamar Team and some of the tutors. I get lots of help to get in contact with designers and finding new jobs. Delamar really set me up for being part of such a great industry.

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE in Professional Make-up Design course 2014

I decided that I wanted to go to Delamar and aspired to have a future career in Make-up and prosthetics since I was just 13. I was living in Cyprus at the time and always had a passion for art and anything hands-on and creative. I found out about Delamar through word of mouth and by doing some research online. I knew as soon as I visited the website that it was the place where I wanted to study. The work previous students had created was amazing and inspiring and having tutors who are in the industry themselves made it top other schools I looked at. It really is amazing that the tutors are in the industry as they know exactly how the industry works and are great contacts, who are given to you before you have even graduated, what more could you want?!

I took the 1 Year HE course, and specialised in prosthetics as that was where my passion lay. The intense 6 weeks of advanced was perfect as you really got the knowledge you need to start off in the industry and being able to completely create your own design from start to finish is a great experience as a lot of the time in the prosthetics industry you work as a team and all collaborate on one job. So it was great to get to do all of it so that you have a wide range of skills to enter the industry with.

The course was so much fun. Everyday was different and so practical. Having the incredibly talented tutors there made the experience so exciting and inspiring and showed you exactly how the industry worked to prepare you for what’s to come.

Having the MET film school just next door was perfect for work experience as they are producing short films very often and, as they are students too, it’s not as nerve-racking to practise and be creative and get to know how a film set works properly, as they are learning themselves.

Overall, I found the 1 year course at Delamar to be an incredible experience. I learnt so much and even now, after graduating, their constant support is really reassuring.

Since finishing the course in June 2014, I have luckily been really busy. I have been a trainee at Kristyan Mallett Make-Up Effects, and also been a trainee at the BBC for Holby City’s prosthetics department. Both these jobs were incredible and I feel so privileged to have had these paid experiences so soon after graduating. I have been constantly busy since graduating, and I am absolutely loving it. Every job is different and exciting.

Everywhere I go, and whoever I meet in the industry, as soon as you mention that you studied at Delamar, they know exactly what it is and even know other people in the industry who have studied there themselves. That really shows that the academy is well known throughout, and I highly recommend any one who wants to get in to this industry to study there.

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE in Professional Make-up Design course in 2017

From the moment I visited the Graduate Exhibition in 2015 the pro Delamar list was getting longer and longer  – when I walked through the doors I instantly felt reassured that I would be supported; the staff (Monika, Jacqui, Leda and Gideon) were friendly, funny and forever helpful from day one!
I chose to study the 1 year Cert HE course simply because I felt it was so comprehensive. My experience of the course on the whole has been nothing short of extraordinary; at times much more difficult and gruelling than I had expected, but still incredible in so many ways – I was learning new things everyday and I was loving it! Like in any lengthy process or study of a new skill there were days when I doubted myself and my ability, and other days where  I felt so proud of what I had achieved!  All the while there were constants I was so grateful for – the encouragement and constructive criticism from tutors meant I was always learning, their vast amount of knowledge being in industry active make up artists was so invaluable – I’ve learnt all the things people don’t tell you – etiquette, dos and don’ts, hints and tips and most importantly qualities I need to build up my work.
Having completed the year, I was able to study both Advanced Fashion and Advanced Hair on top of all the topics in the core teaching curriculum, which meant I was able to meet and study with a lot of students. I’ve made some great friends and colleagues who I hope to work with in the future! It also meant I was taught by a range of tutors working in different fields – theatre, film, tv and fashion, the differences and similarities in the fields, what’s expected of you at different levels in the chain and the sheer amount of possibilities for us was incredible to learn! I think the part of the course I enjoyed the most was Advanced Hair – six weeks of pure hard work and progress. I learnt so much during this time, which has has been so invaluable and helped me to gain more confidence not only in working with wigs but also working under pressure to a given deadline – something you take for granted being in a safe college environment.
Now that my studies are over, I feel both nervous and excited for my future. I know I have a solid foundation of learning,  all thanks to Delamar. Having graduated recently I was lucky enough to start work experience the very next day with the Royal Academy of Music. I have also been working at Sadlers Wells, most recently with the Scottish Ballet and Rambert Dance Company.
My advice to anyone thinking of starting at Delamar – if what you want is this industry, Delamar is the only place you should be! It’s not going to easy but then again they do say that nothing worth having comes easy!

Lucy Oswald

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE in Professional Make-up Design course 2017

I have always had a passion for films and make-up. I used to (and still do) look up the make – up team behind my favorite films on IMDB. From there I spent hours googling their other work and websites – on a mission to find out where the professionals learned all these amazing skills, ‘Delamar’ came up again and again and so that was it, I was determined to go there too!

What I love about Delamar is that no day is the same. Each day you go home with a brand new skill under your belt, and not only are you taught by some of the current best Make – up & hair artists in the industry, you also learn about Industry etiquette.

I decided to take on 6 weeks of advanced hair for my specialisation course, which I cannot recommend enough, because you go further in depth into how to control and style hair – not letting hair control you! I absolutely loved it and became so much more confident with hair.

The support system at Delamar is second to none. I was extremely lucky to have gained a few days of work experience with Catherine Scoble on Howards End and to be ‘stand by swing’ for Wicked the Musical. These opportunities wouldn’t have happened without Delamar.

I feel incredibly excited and grateful that I will be embarking on a career which allows me to enjoy what I do every day. Even though nerves are still there at the beginning, I think the support and encouragement from all the tutors and team at Delamar give you the confidence to go for it! and knowing you have a strong range of skills you can bring to any situation. I owe Delamar all my thanks for the exceptional training I received and I am so honored to be a part of the Delamar family!

Natasha Cole

Graduated from the Advanced Complete Make-up Artist Course 2017

I finished my 22 week course in February and realised that my journey was only just beginning! Leda, Jacqui, Monika and Emma are constantly adding more and more to the Academy making it one of the best, if not the best, place to attend.  I’ve attended two very special master classes with the amazing Mary Greenwell and Bobbi Brown’s Pro Hannah Martin! Wow! I was like the cat that got the cream watching both of these artists working their magic in front of me!

Since finishing I have been busy constantly! I stay in contact with the Academy; I’m networking with people, going on social media, making contacts in every way possible. Delamar have opened doors for me I would never have thought imaginable – the training I have been given has been outstanding.

I’ve worked with some amazing photographers who have now become friends, met some wonderful people, worked on various student and short films and in the last week gained work experience on my first feature film, which was so amazing. I have assisted two great makeup artists, worked on two music videos and even got to work on the amazing actress Michelle Fairley from Games of Thrones!

My new journey isn’t easy and is hard work but I can honestly say ‘hand on heart’ it is one I’m so glad I made and I’m very much looking forward to my future & new path as a ‘makeup artist’. Thank you Delamar.

Elfreda Henebeng

Graduated from the 1 year Cert HE Professional Make-up Design course 2017

The reason why I chose to study on this course is because as far as I can remember, I’ve always had an interest in make – up. The older I got, the more I realised my interest became more of an obsession. From here, I knew I wanted to become a make – up artist. To master my craft, I felt that my only option was to study at one of the best make- up schools in London, which from my research was Delamar.

Studying at Delamar has been an eye-opener for me, it made me realise that make- up was more than just applying a ton of slap, but it was rather based on analysis, taste and in its true form it is an art.

Being a new mum when I started, I found myself being tired all the time and I felt like I wouldn’t progress as well as the other students, due to the 110 things I had to do outside of Delamar. However, from the support I got from the staff and the tutors I managed to complete the course. I have really enjoyed my year at Delamar and I’m happy I chose to study there as I have learnt so many things that I never thought I would and I’ve met so many amazing people.

In all honesty, the course is not as easy as you would expect it to be, but if you put your mind to it you can do it. It challenges you in a good way, which I think we all need.

I am excited and scared about my career. I’m excited because I’ve finally taken the step to follow my dreams and I know it is going to be an amazing journey!
