Lisa Otterburn has been a loved member of our Complete Make-up Artist group starting in January. As a mother of three and with a previous career working with very young school children, Lisa was apprehensive about training here – starting a whole new chapter of her life. You might be surprised to learn that many of our students are over the age of 30, especially on the 16 week and 22 week courses. To read about the difference between these courses you can find out here. We even have tutors who were not always make-up artists or hair stylists. This written account below is by Lisa, before her last day here. We hope it is helpful to any potential students, younger or older:
I first began considering a career as a Make up Artist about 4 years ago. I have a few friends in the entertainment industry and asked them to ask around for the best places to train. Delamar came up time and and time again. It clearly became an obvious choice. I looked at the website initially and then came to an end of year exhibition. I was absolutely blown away by the standards, so much so I ended up going home and talking myself out of applying. This was in part because of my age, I felt I was too old to pursue something so creative and honestly felt I would never be good enough to reach the amazingly high standards of your students. It wasn’t until 2 years later when I was on the set of The Guernsey Potatoe Peel Pie Society with my youngest daughter, who happened to have a small part in the film, that I met one of your graduates. I asked them many questions about Delamar and if they help you with your career etc when you leave, she was so positive and so encouraging about The Delamar Family and so reassuring that age wasn’t a barrier that I decided there and then that I would take a deep breath and go for it!So here I am, about to graduate and I have to say I have absolutely loved every single second of it. It has been exhausting but the weird thing is I haven’t felt exhausted because I have been so engaged in every single aspect of the course that I haven’t had time to think about that.I have never studied anywhere where the teachers are so invested in their students. Each and every tutor has willed us to be the best we can be and the teaching has been at times superb. Especially Wendy and Amanda, they really did take us above and beyond our level of expectations. The special thing about those two is that if you’re willing to put in the hard work they will take your skills as far as they can within the given time frame that for me is amazing value for money.I have found everyone at Delamar so encouraging and welcoming it really has been a pleasure to be there every day. I will miss it dearly. I have already been helped to find four jobs which is fantastic for my CV.My favourite subject was period hair, coming into the course I always wanted to work in period hair one day. It was so challenging and unlike any other hair I have ever done, Wendy had to break my skills down and build them back up again. This was so challenging and at times I felt deflated and even doubted whether or not period hair was for me. But Wendy kept pushing me to up my game and eventually in the last two project days it all clicked and came together, It was so rewarding and so lovely to see the look of pride on Wendy’s face when looking at all of our work. In my opinion, this is not ordinary teaching at Delamar, it is above and beyond what is expected. The tutors are so personally concerned with our success!I hope to go on building my skills and come back in January to complete advanced hair. My ultimate dream is to be on main team hair for a period movie. But to be perfectly honest I have loved every aspect of the course so much that I’d be happy doing anything.
