Awards season is underway! Oscar awards are the most prestigious of accolades to win for many professionals who tirelessly work in the film industry. Make-up artists who have previously won the Oscar for Best Make-up & Hair include Trefor Proud, our own graduate.

The 2018 nominees are:

  1. Darkest Hour

During the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Hitler, or fight on against incredible odds. Starring Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendleson and Lily James.

We had 3 Delamar graduates who worked on this are Rosie Sinfield (you can read all about Rosie’s journey here), Naomi Tolan and Ella Burton, plus two Delamar tutors Laura Solari and Anita Burger.

The make-up artists who might pick up this award are:

  • Ivana Primorac – Make-up designer
  • Lucy Sibbic – Prosthetic makeup and hair designer: Gary Oldman
  • Kazuhiro Tsuji – Prosthetic makeup and hair designer: Gary Oldman

2. Wonder

Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.

Leda, our Course Director has watched this film and commented:

“Beautifully designed and applied make-up with a heartbreaking performance by Jacob Tremblay.”

The make-up artists who might scoop this award are

  • Naomi Bakstad – Make-up department head
  • Robert A. Pandini – Dept. head hair
  • Arjen Tuiten – Special make-up designer: Jacob Tremblay

3. Victoria & Abdul

Queen Victoria strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.

The make-up artist up for this award is Daniel Phillips who was the Make-up Designer.

This make-up is classic Victorian period on Judi Dench and a large cast of actors in full period costume and hair. The trailer nicely references a powder application with an old fashioned powder puff. We like this moment!
