Krystal Buckley tells all about her year training at Delamar. The former singer/songwriter and recent Delamar graduate gave us a personal account of her year on the 1 year Cert HE Professional Make-up Design course…
I can’t actually believe this is my last week at Delamar Academy, this last year has been one of the best of my life and I’m forever grateful to the Delamar family for all I have gained and achieved.
I remember my first day walking in and being so overwhelmed by all the products and everything we had at our fingertips, I couldn’t wait to start. I remember seeing pictures of past students’ work and hearing about the work they’ve gone on to do, hoping that I would one day be capable of the same. Now I can walk away able to pull out a finger wave, graphic liner and a bald cap….still can’t actually believe it!
During my time, I have had some wonderful work experience, which I still pinch myself over. Since I started, I tried my best to say YES to everything. I always thought if I don’t know what to do, then I’ll learn! My first big work experience was as a trainee of the film, “The Favourite”, starring Emma Stone. The make-up and hair was out of this world, I was walking around trying to soak as much in as possible. Then a couple of weeks later I got an email asking if I was interested in being a trainee on, “Howards End,” the new BBC Production designed by Catherine Scoble. I remember reading the email 5 times, thinking, “wait, I actually get to work on something with THE Catherine Scoble!” This was another incredible show with more period hair and make-up, the Edwardian hair is my favourite and it just all was so stunning.
Before attending Delamar I used to watch Sarah Jagger’s youtube videos and read her blogs. At the most recent IMATS, I got to be on the main stage assisting her. My first time attending IMATS and getting to assist someone I admire, you can imagine what an unbelievable moment that was! Sarah was just as lovely as she is talented.
This weekend I got to work on a production called, “Filth and The Fury”, this was with Laura Solari, whom I very much respect and look up to. Laura was one of our Advanced Hair tutors and I have to say Advanced Hair was one of the best choices I could have made. Standing on a make-up bus next to Laura, getting to dye some funky 1970’s hairstyles was so much fun!
I have had many other opportunities, in Television, Theatre and Fashion this last year and now as I prepare to become a graduate I cant wait to see what the future has in store. None of this would have been possible though without the help of the amazing staff, tutors and family at Delamar Academy – I can’t thank them enough!
